Here We Go Again
LJ is at it again. And by "at it" I mean they have clarified the "content that would be prohibited under our policy on illegal and harmful activity"
. Specifically, the post I linked to states that "If it qualifies as obscene, and if it involves minors (people under the age of 18), then it's not allowed." Which would be rather more useful if the qualifications for obscenity were themselves clear; as brown_betty
states, "There are no rules that you will be safe if you follow. It doesn't matter what the law is in the country you live in. If it depicts sex, and lj decides that "the average person" would find it obscene, and that it has "no redeeming literary, artistic, political [or] scientific value" (cite,) that's obscene.
". (Her post is well worth reading, not least because it quotes from and points to obscenity expert Violet Blue's discussion of these issues here
Some have theorized that this was announced either in anticipation of this weekend's release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
and the ensuing surge in fan creations, or timed to be overshadowed by that release. Be that as it may. brown_betty
has also written a guide to backing up one's LJ
has laid out options for moving
in a clear and useful comparison.

fandom pays poll
Please vote if you consider yourself to be a part of LJ-based fandom.
Whether you are an active participant or a lurker, you might consider yourself part of LJ-based fandom if you got a LJ partly or wholly because of fandom, fan fiction, fan art, vidding, etc.The purpose of the poll is to get a basic idea how much money fandom pays into Livejournal.
points out any LJ user can see their payment history here
for reference.) The final questions relate to the recent suspension of fannish communities and journals with controversial terms in their "interests" lists.
Anyone can see the results of this poll and your name will be attached, so if that bothers you, don't take the poll. :-) If you'd still like to participate without making this info public, you can make a screened comment with your answers over here
Note that most questions below ask what you have
. So if someone gave you a paid account or paid icons, your answer to "Do you have a paid account" will be yes, and your answer to "how many of your accounts have
paid icons" will be "12" or however many it is.
But then answer honestly when it comes to how much you have paid for your LJ account: if you've never paid a dime, choose $0. There's another question for gift-givers to estimate how much they've paid so that we can hopefully account for LJ fairies.
Thanks for taking the poll! Please consider joining fandom_counts, a community created solely to get a fandom head count.ETA: Because you demanded it!
Do you have a paid LJ account? (If you have a Basic or Plus account, answer here and then skip to the last question please!)
Yes, I have a Paid account
Yes, I have a Permanent account
No, I have a Basic account

Some fans have additional paid LJ accounts for communities, RPG sock puppets, etc. How many paid LJ accounts do you have? (Please don't count paid time gifts to friends here, only your own accounts.)
Mean: 1.25 Median: 1 Std. Dev 1.26
Typically LJ accounts cost from $3 a month to $19.95 a year, plus additional fees for more icons, etc. How much do you estimate you have paid for your LJ account(s) to date?
If you have given other LJ users or communities paid time, please choose an estimated amount you have given in total to date:
How many of your accounts have $12/year additional icons?
Mean: 0.87 Median: 1 Std. Dev 0.97
How many of your accounts have $24/year additional storage space?
Mean: 0.05 Median: 0 Std. Dev 0.31
If you have bought virtual gifts on LJ, please estimate how much you have spent on them in total:
$0.99 to $1.99
